DIN EN 14492-2: A Standard for Power Driven Hoists
DIN EN 14492-2 is a European standard that specifies the requirements for power driven hoists with or without trolleys for which the prime mover is an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic motor. It applies to hoists that are used for lifting and lowering loads that are suspended on hooks or other load lifting attachments. Hoists can be used either in cranes, in other machines, or by itself. The standard covers different types of hoists, such as rope hoists, chain hoists, belt hoists, NGL building hoists and winches.
The standard defines the relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to power driven hoists which were for the first time placed on the EEA market. It also provides guidance on the design, information for use, maintenance and testing of power driven hoists. The standard aims to ensure the safety and performance of power driven hoists and to facilitate their conformity assessment.
The standard was published in 2019 and replaces the previous version from 2010. It incorporates several changes and updates, such as:
the adaptation of the normative references;
the addition of a requirement for the marking of control devices;
the modification of the requirement for the test of friction torque limiters;
the adaptation of the requirements for the user information on the sound pressure level and the marking;
the addition of requirements for auxiliary hoists intended for transporting hot molten masses;
the modification of Annex F \"Rated capacity\" and Annex K \"Noise test code\";
the correction of the formulas in Annex J.2.5;
the incorporation of Annex ZC on the relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

In this article, we will provide an overview of the main features and benefits of DIN EN 14492-2, as well as some examples of its application in different industries and sectors. We will also compare it with some other standards that are relevant for power driven hoists.
Main features and benefits of DIN EN 14492-2
DIN EN 14492-2 is a comprehensive and harmonized standard that covers all aspects of power driven hoists, from their design and construction to their operation and maintenance. It provides clear and consistent requirements for the safety and performance of power driven hoists, as well as guidance on how to comply with them. Some of the main features and benefits of DIN EN 14492-2 are:
It defines the terms and definitions related to power driven hoists, such as rated capacity, rated speed, duty cycle, load spectrum, load factor, etc.
It specifies the general requirements for power driven hoists, such as materials, dimensions, tolerances, markings, identification plates, etc.
It classifies power driven hoists according to their type, duty class and lifting medium.
It sets out the specific requirements for each type of power driven hoist, such as rope hoists, chain hoists, belt hoists, NGL building hoists and winches.
It establishes the requirements for the safety-related functions of controls, such as emergency stop, limit switches, overload protection devices, etc.
It prescribes the requirements for the information for use of power driven hoists, such as instructions manual, labels, warnings, etc.
It outlines the requirements for the maintenance and inspection of power driven hoists, such as frequency, methods, records, etc.
It determines the requirements for the testing and verification of power driven hoists, such as type tests, routine tests, acceptance tests, etc.
It references other standards that are applicable to power driven hoists or their components, such as electrical equipment (EN 60204-32), hydraulic equipment (EN 982), pneumatic equipment (EN 983), etc.
By following DIN EN 14492-2, manufacturers and users of power driven hoists can ensure that their products meet the essential health and safety requirements of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. They can also benefit from the presumption of conformity that this standard grants them. Moreover, they can enhance the quality and reliability of their products and services, as well as improve their competitiveness in the European market. 061ffe29dd
