Ustaz Yahya Othman was a prominent Malaysian Islamic scholar, leader, and politician who passed away in 2012. He resigned from his academic position in 1978 to contest in the general election as a PAS candidate for the Pasir Puteh parliamentary seat. He also founded and directed the Institut al-Nur, an Islamic institute, after PAS lost power in Kelantan in the 1980s.
Ustaz Yahya Othman was appointed as a member of the PAS Central Working Committee from 1983 to 1999 and a member of the PAS Ulama Council from 1987. He also served as the secretary of the PAS Ulama Council from 1993 to 1998. He was elected as a state assemblyman for Banggol Judah in Kelantan from 1990 to 1999 and became the chairman of the State Committee on Islamic Development, Education, and Dakwah. He was conferred the title of Datuk by the Sultan of Kelantan in recognition of his services.
Ustaz Yahya Othman was widely regarded as a murabbi (mentor) for many PAS leaders and activists. He was known for his deep knowledge of Islam, his eloquence in preaching, his humility and sincerity, and his dedication to the cause of Islam. He passed away on June 14, 2012 at the age of 72 after a long illness. He was buried at his hometown in Labok, Kelantan.
